| Eppawela Posphate mining | |||

Eppawela Phosphate mining proposal was the most controversial project in the 90s until year 2001. This is a privatisation of a 56 Square kilometer phosphate deposit located in Eppawela in the North- Central Province and about 20 kilometers from the ancient Anuradhapura city. |

The project included a 800 Sq Kilometer area including the proposed buffer zone. It was criticised by economic, environmental and social angles. As a result of the case filed by the EFL on behalf of seven petitioners of Eppawela Area, Supreme court of Sri Lanka made a landmark decision and ordered the Sri Lankan authorities to conduct studies and open them to the public before make any decision. Around 30,000 people were gathered in Colombo in some occasions to protest against this project |
