May 12, 2006. Despite the criticism of the scientist and general public government of Sri Lanka laid the foundation stone for the fisrt Coal power project in Sri Lanka in Nuraichcholai, an agricultural area located near Puttalam on the 11th May 2006. |

The project will generate 900 MW at the completion. This is supported by the Chinese Government.
People in the area did not attend the occasion. However, they organized a protest in Daluwa church located nearby. More than 3000 people attended this protest event. |
