Forest destruction |
| |
Sri Lankan Natural forest cover has been reduced to 19% of the land cover. Early 90s it was more than 24%. Mangrove forest cover also has reduced from 12,000 hectares in 1982 to less than 4500 hectares mainly due to shrimp farming and coastal development. |
| |
Forest fires, illegal logging, tea cultivation and increase of population are some major problems for the destruction of forest cover. Sri Lankan Wetzone forests are very high in bio diversity. However, forest destruction has caused many negative impacts to the country, nature and the ecological cycles including water.
Centre for Environmental Justice launched a programme to educate public on preventing Forest Fires. |
