Campaign Launched "Let Us Live -Don't poison us"
A campaign was launched against Ago-Chemicals on July 7, 2011 at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agriculture Research and Training Institute, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 with the participation of over 200 people representing farmers, Trade unions, civil society organizations, academics and researches. Campaign on food sovereignty and Genetically Modified Foods

CEJ filed legal action against the Ministry of Health seeking regulations to control geneticalli modified food. As a result Modified foods lebelling was introduced since January 2007 in Sri Lanka.

Do you check the label? Tell us if you suspect any food contain genetically modified material. Read more

   
Agrofuel

Sri Lanka plans to run train engines with biofuel by 2010 from Corn, Sugar cane, Soya Bean produce biofuel. This has created a food crisis. Millions of forest lands have been cleared for making sugar cane, Soya and Oil palm in Brazil,Indonesia and many other contries. This lang grabbing lead the poor indegenious people loose their community lands. Sri Lanka is planning to grow 5000 hectares of sugar palm in Nilgala near Bibila.

Sethusamudram ship canal

Sethusamudram ship canal between Sri Lanka and India is harmful to the environment and biodiversity. But India wants to develop this for security reasons. It may increase coastal erosion in the western side of the island. There was no tranboundary EIA conducted for this purpose. Listen to the people. Stop Sathusamudram canal.

Stop Water privatization - Keeping water in public hands

Efforts to privatise water services is an ongoing process in Sri Lanka. Keeping water in public hand is a continuous struggle of the civil society movement. The water privation was a effort of the Asian Development Bank form 1999 to 2005. Later World Bank was in the same play. Now the IMF is trying to privatise water and energy.

Civil society has a major role to play in democratizing water. Join this effort. Read more

   
POPs Elimination

Persistent Organic Pollutants known as deadly "Dirty Dozen" cause Cancer and other health impacts. POps are banned under the Stolkholm Convention since 2001. Yet Sri Lanka has no regulations to control POPs. Old transformer oil wchich contain PCBs still in circulation in the country. Some PCB contaminated material still available in Sri Lanka.

  • Save Energy! Insted CFL bulbs look for LED bulbs.
  • Keep old CFL bulbs away from your kids. It contains Hg.
